A story coming from the past
Giovanni Dolfi
Dear customer,
Welcome to Dolfi — two old farms, the first one of the XVII century, the second one of the XIX century, dedicated to the artisanal production of unique wines.
My winery is located in Tuscany, the most prestigious producing region in Italy, with two red wine vineyards totaling 10 hectares and a new white wine vineyard of 5 hectares on the slopes of the Pisan hills. Our main vineyard Poggio di Galleta was recorded in 1869, and it first belonged to the nobles in the small town of Lari. By the beginning of the 20th century my mother's family had acquired the vineyard and my maternal grandfather, Fornarino Bendinelli, began to work in winemaking. He was a farmer who knew how to grow the perfect grapes in the field. His cousin, Don Giuseppe Bendinelli, was not only the prefect of Lari — the well-respected priest in the small town of Perignano was also a well-known winemaker at the time. I grew up playing in the vineyard with him, and I deeply learned about the impact of changes in nature on plants, and how to get the best possible harvest in autumn through meticulous field management. Since I was a kid, I thought the vineyard was a magical place.
But when I was a young adult, I became most interested in racing, so I chose a career path as a professional horse racing trainer. My philosophy is to manage the training of horses in a natural way, so that they are really strong in order to be able to achieve sustained victory. Through this training method, my horses have also won championships in countless races, both big and small. Because of this profession, I had the opportunity to meet many famous people, including the late mother of the Queen of England, and the Marquis Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, owner of Tenuta San Guido. On a summer evening in 1998, we were looking at the Dolfi vineyard at sunset, after dinner. He suddenly asked me why I didn't upgrade my family vineyard, since it would have the potential to produce world-class wines. After careful preparation with the full support of Dr. Giacomo Tachis, I have restored my vineyard and transformed it into what everyone sees today.
Running a winery that strives for top quality means countless challenges, from bad weather to various pests and diseases, up to the ups and downs of the market. But my philosophy of managing the vineyard is the same as when I was managing the stables: keeping each vine healthy and strong so they can produce perfect grapes. Through meticulous management of the winemaking process we authentically produce top quality wines full of personality and purity. Over the decades, I have never stopped improving, drawing on the archive of local Italian traditions and ancient agricultural classics, while also drawing extensive lessons from global wine production, and have finally formed my own unique style. For those who appreciate Dolfi wines, it may be difficult to categorize my style, but I believe everyone can feel the pure, authentic and unique qualities. After decades of hard work, my winery now produces award-winning wines that are recognised by top critics and wine collectors, appearing in Emirates First Class and many high-end restaurants and hotels. I am very pleased that my hard work can be recognised by everyone.
Perfection is a goal that can never be reached, but I firmly believe that with our pure heart and unremitting efforts, we will never stop and continue to move forward towards this goal every day!
